Audrey died after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer's at the Cedar Crest facility in Tualatin.
Audrey was born in Springfield, Minn., to Norbert and Hilda Hornick and lived most of her younger life in Sanborn, Minn. She was a cheerleader and loved to roller skate at the local indoor rink. After high school, she spent three years at St. Catherine College at St. Paul, Minn., before going to the University of Minnesota, where she majored in Art and Art Design. There she met her future husband, Ben Curtis, whom she married in 1952 while he was a student at the University of Minnesota Dental School. They had a daughter, Cathy Ann, in 1953. After graduation, Ben enlisted in the Air Force and the family was stationed in Wendover, Utah for two years. While there, they had a son, Thomas Benjamin. After discharge, they moved to Redwood Falls, Minn., for one year and then to Portland, where Ben set up a dental office in Northeast Portland.
Audrey loved oil painting and won several awards at state and local fairs. She had a great eye for color and design and loved collecting models of rabbits, shore birds and duck decoys. She also loved gardening and yard work and was outside whenever possible. She opened an antique shop in the Sellwood area in Southeast Portland and ran it successfully for 12 years. The family moved to Lake Oswego in 1986.
Audrey was preceded in death by her sister, Maxine Kleinart of Springfield, Minn.; and her daughter, Cathy Ann Ward of Lacey, Wash. She leaves her husband, Ben; son, Dr. Thomas B. Curtis; stepdaughter, Connie Zinc Curtis; two step-granddaughters; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
