Alfred P. Viado, fondly known as “Al,” of Beaverton, Oregon, age 76, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2024, at Portland VA Medical Center with his wife, Pam Viado by his side. Born in Lihue, Hawaii on March 23, 1948, he was son of Grace Baptista Viado and Jesus Viado. Al was a renowned lighting design engineer, a devoted friend and loving husband, father to 4, grandfather to 10 and great grandfather to 2.
Born and raised in Kauai, Hawaii, he was the 4th of 5 children. Al proudly served in the Navy from 1967 to 1971. After his time in the military, he made Portland, Oregon his home, where he built his family, established his career and became an integral part of the community. He was injured in a motorcycle accident on August 30, 2005, and successfully maneuvered through life as a quadriplegic for 19 years.
Al was a true European sports car enthusiast, with a special appreciation for sleek design, performance, engineering, and craftsmanship. After saving for many years, he bought his prized possession, a black 1988 Porsche 911 Carerra Cabriolet Wide Body. Al found great joy driving and taking immaculate care of this car.
Al was competitive in sports, both as an athlete and as a spectator. He loved to play basketball, volleyball and tennis, and was a certified volleyball referee for many years. Al was a die hard Portland Blazer fan, a season ticket holder, and took lots of friends and family to watch games together. He also loved watching NFL football and yelling at the TV.
He had an affinity for music and a wide range of musical style: classic rock, jazz, popera, rhythm and blues, worship music, and country. He himself was an amazing singer and enjoyed concerts of all kinds.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, Jesus and Grace Viado, his sister, Dolores Viado Ragudo, and his brother Raymond Viado. Survived by his wife, Pamela Viado, his children, Sarah Viado and Paul Viado, his stepchildren, Brett Parry and Shanna Huante, his brothers, James Viado and George Viado, and his beloved dogs, Bella and Joey.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 1, 2025 at 1:00 pm at Willamette National Cemetery in Happy Valley, Oregon. Arrangements by Riverview Abbey.
