Barbara Schlotfeldt Obituary

Patricia Barbara Schlotfeldt, known to all as Barbara - a gifted musician, devoted pastoral care counselor, and lifelong learner - passed away on November 24, 2024, at the age of 86. Her life was a celebration of artistic expression, and compassionate service.

 

A woman of extraordinary talents, Barbara was a skilled classical pianist and operatic soprano whose musical gifts brought joy to many. Her creativity extended to her beloved garden, which she cultivated with the same care and passion she applied to every aspect of her life. An avid lover of poetry, and profound spiritual writings, Barbara found deep inspiration in the works of spiritual leaders from diverse traditions, reflecting her commitment to inclusion and spiritual growth.

 

Barbara’s remarkable journey of personal growth led in her fifties to a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington. Demonstrating extraordinary determination, she continued her educational pursuits and completed a master’s degree in theological studies from Seattle University at the age of 60.

 

Her professional calling was deeply rooted in compassionate care. Barbara served as a pastoral care counselor at St. Joseph’s Hospital and the Crystal Judson Family Justice Center, where she touched countless lives with her empathy and spiritual guidance until her retirement. A longtime member of St. Leo’s Parish in Tacoma, she was actively involved in interfaith communities, embodying a sprit of inclusivity and understanding. 

 

A devoted mother, Barbara is survived by her children,

 Ellen, Louis, John, and Bernie; her grandchildren Anthony, Joshua, Matthew (Vrvilo), Donald Stryker, David (Fast), Dylan (Beckett), Rebecca (Brubacker), Hannah and Rachel (Yim); siblings Kate (Schmitt), and Diane (Chan); niece Bahkti (Chan); and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Leo Edward and sons Joseph and Thomas Beckett.

 

Barbara’s funeral will be held on Saturday, December 14th at 11:00 AM at:

 

St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church 

4112 SW Sixth Avenue Drive 

Portland, OR 97239
