Clifford Nelson Obituary

Dr. Clifford C. Nelson, MD, a distinguished forensic pathologist and dedicated public servant, passed away June 27, 2025, at the age of 63. With exceptional expertise and unwavering commitment, Cliff served his community and the broader field of forensic science for decades with integrity, precision and compassion, leaving behind a legacy of excellence.

Born in Devil’s Lake, North Dakota, to Doug and Faye Nelson, the family later relocated to Seattle, Washington. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, his favorite times were spent with his dad, especially going fishing with the “the men”.  He liked playing chess and other games and always played to win.

Cliff earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Portland in 1984, having received the Blondel Carleton Award, the highest honor given to a graduating senior in the Biology Department, and his medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University in 1989, receiving the Alma B. Sneeden Award for outstanding scholarship in pathology. Cliff went on to complete specialized training in forensic pathology. Over his remarkable career, he worked with numerous medical examiner offices and law enforcement agencies, helping to bring clarity and closure in the face of tragedy. His meticulous approach to death investigation earned Cliff a reputation for excellence, and his testimony in courtrooms was marked by accuracy, clarity and respect for the truth.

Throughout his career, Cliff mentored countless students, residents and fellow professionals, always emphasizing the ethical dimensions of forensic medicine. In every case he handled, Cliff believed in the sacred responsibility of speaking for those who could no longer speak for themselves.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Cliff was known for his gentle demeanor, sharp wit, deep compassion and commitment to his family. He is survived by his wife, Kristy Nelson, daughter Elizabeth Nelson, mother, Faye Nelson, and brother, Jim Nelson, and brother-in-law, Richard Lapin. Cliff’s love for his family was unconditional.
