In Loving Memory of De Chiem
De Chiem, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend, departed this world on Friday morning, September 15th, 2023, in Portland, Oregon.
De’s life was filled with love, joy, triumphs, and remarkable achievements, while overcoming adversities and beating the odds. He was a man of unbreakable determination and unparalleled work ethic, earning him the title of the hardest working person in the world among those who knew him.
De was a friend to everyone he met. He was charming and humorous, always capable of making people feel at ease and relaxed in his company. He had an endearing gift of bringing comfort and smiles into the lives of those in his life as well as strangers he met throughout his day. Though he may have been a man of few words, his warm, welcoming smiles and laughter spoke volumes about the genuine joy he found in connecting with others.
For 47 years, De was the devoted husband and lifelong companion to his loving and supportive wife, Ellen Chiem. Together, they navigated life's journey hand in hand, literally and figuratively, everywhere they went. They dedicated their lives to providing a better life for their family.
De’s three children meant more to him than he could ever express himself. So he showed it through actions, taking them to every adventure, experience, and giving them every opportunity he did not have himself. He was always putting his children's well-being and happiness above all else. His legacy lives on through his son Dennis Chiem and daughter-in-law Fiona, his oldest daughter Victoria Labuda and son-in-law David, and his youngest daughter Denise Lazaro and son-in-law Yan.
The light of De's life in recent years came from his three precious granddaughters: Avery Labuda, and Zoe, and Vida Lazaro. These girls brought overwhelming love and joy into his world over the past six years, making every moment spent with them a gift he treasured.
A celebration of De Chiem's remarkable life will be held on Wednesday, September 20th, 2023, just one day before his birthday. The memorial service will take place at:
Riverview Abbey Funeral Home
319 S. Taylors Ferry Rd.
Portland, OR 97219
