Obituary

Carroll Edward Tyler passed away peacefully in his sleep Jan. 9, 2023 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s.

Born Nov. 15, 1931 to Carroll and Felicia Tyler, he is survived by his wife of 69 years, Joyce Tyler; son, David (Sandy); daughter, Laura (Bill); daughter, Felicia (Bruce); six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Ed graduated from Washington High School in Portland in 1949, and the University of Oregon in 1953, earning a Masters degree in 1961. Ed and Joyce met at the university and married in 1953. He began his career as a high school teacher and administrator, next at the Bureau of Educational Research and Service at the University of Oregon, and then as Director of Dissemination and Product Demonstration at the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory. Ed then made a substantial career change becoming a Realtor for Cronin & Caplan Realty Group, moving up to manager, trainer, and part owner, and retiring in 1997.

Ed’s real estate career was distinguished, with service as president of the Oregon Association of Realtors, Clackamas County Association of Realtors, Portland Association of Realtors and Portland Metropolitan Association of Realtors. He was named Realtor of the Year by the Clackamas County Association of Realtors, the Oregon Association of Realtors, and the Oregon chapter of Certified Residential Specialists. After retirement Ed conducted state-wide Realtor training in Professional Standards and the Realtor Code of Ethics, and served as interim manager of several Oregon branch offices of Windermere Cronin & Caplan Realty Group. He was chairman of the Pastoral Council at St. Mary Cathedral Parish, volunteered for Hospice, for St. Vincent De Paul, for Goose Hollow Family Shelter, and for the Green Gables Guest House of Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital. He was a board member of Northwest Portland Ministries.

Ed was kind, compassionate, patient, charismatic, supportive, and a loving husband and father and grandfather. He so enjoyed hosting parties and gatherings together with Joyce and their many travels together. Roles that Ed embraced throughout his life were mentorship and service – mentoring and helping to guide high school students, teachers, homeowners and future homeowners, Realtors, and assisting those in need. His impact was felt and appreciated by many.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023, at St. Mary Cathedral, 1716 N.W. Davis St., Portland. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to the Alzheimer Association or charity of choice.
