Elizabeth "Betsy" Trenholme Obituary

Elizabeth "Betsy" (Morceau) Trenholme, 81, passed away surrounded by the love of her family, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, generosity, and unwavering devotion to those she loved.

Betsy was born on September 11, 1944, in Queens, New York, to Elizabeth "Betty" (McElwee) Morceau and Ernest Morceau. She grew up alongside her younger brother, Michael, and often spoke fondly of her childhood in New York. She was especially proud that her father was a pastry chef, a profession she admired throughout her life. While he worked long hours, her mother created a loving home for the family.

Determined and independent from an early age, Betsy put herself through nursing school at Philadelphia General Hospital. She took immense pride in the education and rigorous training she received there, which laid the foundation for a distinguished career in nursing.

As a young woman seeking adventure, Betsy packed everything she owned into her brown 1972 Chevy Impala and headed west, determined to build a life beyond the East Coast. She settled in Seattle, where she worked as an intensive care nurse. There she met Stuart, then a medical student. They married, moved to Texas, and welcomed their first two children, Lisa and Christopher. After Stuart completed his medical training, the family relocated to Portland, Oregon, where they welcomed their youngest son, Michael.

For nearly three decades, Betsy and Stuart raised their family together while working side by side to build Stuart's cardiology practice. Following their divorce, Betsy poured her energy into creating a beautiful and welcoming home. She was always immersed in a remodeling project, tending her landscaping, or finding the perfect decorative touch. Her home reflected her creativity, warmth, and hospitality.

Family was the center of Betsy's life. She treasured her six grandchildren—Luke, Benjamin, Tillie, Devin, Mari, and Kane—and generously cared for them so their parents could pursue their careers. Her home was also a welcoming place for the children of her own children's friends, whom she loved and cared for as if they were part of the family. She delighted in watching children grow and proudly shared that two of her grandchildren took their very first steps in her home. Many children learned to swim in her pool.

Betsy's love language was food. After retiring from nursing, she attended culinary school, combining her lifelong love of cooking with her gift for bringing people together. She catered weddings, celebrated family milestones, fed several college sports teams, and hosted countless gatherings where no one ever left hungry. Whether around her dining table, the backyard, or in her kitchen, she created lasting memories through delicious meals, laughter, and conversation.

She also loved the thrill of finding a great bargain and never met a sale she could resist. Purple was her favorite color. She embraced life with warmth, generosity, and an adventurous spirit. She found joy in traveling, gathering with family and friends, and creating memories that will be cherished for generations.

In her final days, family and friends traveled from near and far to be by her side, sharing stories, laughter, tears, and their love while she was still with them. The outpouring of visits was a testament to the countless lives Betsy touched through her kindness, generosity, and unwavering care for others. She was deeply loved, and the presence of so many who came to say goodbye reflected the lasting impact she made on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Betsy is survived by her children, Lisa, Christopher (Heidi), and Michael (Sarah); her beloved grandchildren, Luke, Benjamin, Tillie, Devin, Mari, and Kane; and her brother, Michael Morceau (Vicki). She is also lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephew, Eric (Laura), Karen (Charlie), and Kristy (Matt), as well as their children, all of whom held a special place in her heart.

Betsy will be remembered for her strength, independence, remarkable work ethic, generous heart, and the deep love she gave so freely to her family and friends. Her kindness, resilience, and gift for making others feel welcome will be profoundly missed and forever cherished by all who knew and loved her.
