John McKinnon Obituary

Jack McKinnon passed away peacefully at home in Portland with Barbara, his wife for the past 30 years by his side. He was 95 years old.

By many measures, Jack created and lived a great life. It started when his parents John and Agnes McKinnon emigrated from Scotland and British Columbia to White Center, Washington.

Born the second youngest with four sisters, he moved with the family to Portland and finished grade school at Holy Redeemer, eventually enrolling in Benson Polytechnic's college bound engineering program. As luck would have it, he started dating neighborhood girl, Eleanor Tice and was able to get a summer job with her father's company earning enough for the first year's tuition at Oregon State College. Enter WWII and a stint in the Navy, during which he graduated from the University of Colorado. Upon his return, he married Eleanor and joined Tice Electric. His hard work and stewardship over the next 40 years as co-owner and ultimately president, resulted in the company becoming one of the leading electrical contracting firms in Oregon.

A family man with three daughters, Susan McKinnon Kliks, Claudia McKinnon Brown and Emily McKinnon, he also ascribed to the "work hard, play hard" ethic, which allowed for a lifetime of friendships from playing golf, tennis, pitch, cribbage, and fly-fishing. Never one to be the center of attention, he nonetheless was always a presence in the room and on the dance floor. If he was your friend, you knew it, and there were many over his 95 years, through Waverley Country Club, NECA, Rotary, Portland Execs, and Arlington Club.

He is survived by wife, Barbara; daughters, Susan (and Bernard Kliks), Claudia, and Emily; sister, Loretta Maloney; stepson, Eric Wagner; and granddaughter, Noel Luneke.

Sisters, Evelyn (Leary), Sally (Hobin), and Constance Schommer, all preceded him in death.

Service will be held at 10 am on Friday, February 14, 2020 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 424 SW Mill Street, Portland.
