John Stobie Obituary

John Raymond Stobie was born in Portland, Oregon on November 9, 1944 at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. John attended Sunset High School, and was a member of the first full graduating class of 1962.  After graduation, he joined the Army. He planned to drive tanks, but changed his mind during training because jumping out of planes seemed like more fun! He was part of the 101st Airborne and stationed at Fort Campbell, KY. Eventually, he moved to Beaverton, OR, and purchased his grandmother’s house where he resided until his death.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Ruth Stobie.  He is survived by his wife Margaret of 44 years, two brothers (Jim; Fargo, ND, Tom; Hillsboro, OR), two children (Robin Lane; Woodinville, WA, Arthur Lane; Brentwood, TN) and five grandsons (Griffen; 22, Dylan; 20, Austin; 18, Clayton; 11 and Andrew; 7).

Following in his family’s footsteps, John’s first job was with the railroad.  He moved onto General Electric and then to Anaconda Wire and Cable.  John transitioned from manual trades to a career with ABF, a national freight line company, as an award-winning district sales manager until his retirement.

In his spare time, John enjoyed cars and built a custom 1933 Ford Hot Rod.  John was an excellent fisherman, participating in many tournaments and even winning a Salmon Derby.  John loved the great outdoors - camping, hunting and golfing. His favorite place to vacation with friends and family was Hawaii - specifically, the island of Maui. He loved the beaches and ocean, and the easy, relaxing pace of life.
