Maramie Daine Mettie February 7, 1933 – May 12, 2024
Maramie Daine Mettie, neé Cleveland, passed away in Portland, OR on May 12, 2024, Mother’s Day. An only child, she was born in Booneville, Arkansas to Nettie Mae (Townsend) and Emmett Cleveland. Daine was raised in Petit Jean, Arkansas where her father was a schoolteacher in a one-room schoolhouse, and the family lived on a farm with an orchard growing peaches, pears, and apples. From an early age, she was raised in the evangelical religion and complemented her love of God with her talent as a musician. Daine played the piano, organ, and accordion, and as a young woman traveled throughout the South with other musicians playing at evangelical gatherings. She met the “love of her life” H. Earl Mettie while giving him piano lessons at Day Music Company. They married in 1964, and eventually moved to Kalama, WA in 1970. Daine taught piano and organ to many children in the Kalama area and played the organ and piano for the Woodland Assembly of God Church for many years.
In 2021 her health was declining, and after being hospitalized with congestive heart failure, was also diagnosed with dementia. She was moved to memory care facilities in Portland to be closer to her stepchildren, but toward the end, she no longer remembered who they were.
Daine is survived by her stepdaughter, Karen Mayhew (Fred), and stepson, Keith Mettie (Angie). She is also survived by four grandsons, Karl, Paul, Daniel, & Joel Mayhew; by two great-granddaughters, Ava, and Olive Mayhew; and by four great-grandsons, Rizen, Parker, Joel, and Bloom Mayhew. She is also survived by her cousin Lora Cleveland Bassham of Arkansas.
She will be buried in Willamette National Cemetery with her beloved husband, Earl, who passed away in 2008. Remembrances may be made to her favorite charity, the Portland Gospel Mission.
