Richard “Rick” Jack Schafer, 63, of Portland, Oregon, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family just one week shy of his 64th birthday.
He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and cousin.
Born and raised in Portland, Rick found his lifelong passion through the lens of a camera. Mentored by his renowned stepfather, Ray Atkeson, Rick followed in his footsteps to become a respected second-generation landscape and commercial photographer. He had a gift for capturing the natural beauty of Oregon and later found joy in culinary photography as well.
Rick was an extrovert through and through—always happiest surrounded by others, sharing stories, laughter, and good times. A diehard Oregon State fan, he loved sports and was a dedicated coach to his young children, impacting not only their lives but also the lives of many teammates and families along the way. You would often catch him singing along to country music or, his favorite, Jimmy Buffett. He enjoyed fishing and clamming along the coast, and he could often be found with a camera in one hand and a wide grin on his face.
Rick is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 34 years, Teresa; his children, Lorae Parker (and her husband Seth), Mitchell, Brett, and Jackson; and his cherished granddaughter, Reese. He also leaves behind his sister Loralee and her husband Paul, as well as his niece Megan and her family. His legacy lives on through his family, friends, and the many lives he touched through both his art and his boundless affability.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your local animal shelter in Rick’s name. A celebration of life will be held in August 2025. Details will be shared at a later date.
