Wylma Scattarella

Wylma Scattarella, of Portland, Oregon, passed away December 29, 2019. She was 95. Wylma was born January 11, 1924 to Willard and Enid Shaw in Fruitland, Idaho. 

Wylma and Don Scattarella met on Whidbey Island, Washington during World War II, where Don was stationed as a Navy corpsman and Wylma was in her first year as a grade school teacher.  The two were married August 4, 1945 in Mt. Vernon Washington and had two boys, Kim and Kraig. After coming to Portland, Wylma continued her teaching career at McKay Elementary.

She retired in 1985 after teaching for 26 years. Don retired in 1986 after practicing dentistry in Southwest Portland for 35 years. The two loved to travel, spending many winters in Palm Springs. Otter Crest on the Oregon Coast was another favorite spot, along with other trips across the United States and Europe. 

Every Wednesday for 25 years, Wylma would put on her blue jacket and spend time volunteering at Legacy Meridian Park Hospital. It was always the highlight of her week.

She is survived by her husband Don, her son Kim, son Kraig, his wife Paula, and her two grandchildren Alex and Anna. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Enid Shaw, and her sister Margie Burley.

Wylma will forever be remembered for her lovely smile, the beautiful flowers she grew, and her love of ice cream. The family would like to thank The Springs at Carman Oaks and Legacy Hospice for the wonderful love and care you gave to Wylma.

A memorial service for Wylma will be held on Saturday, January 25, 1:00 p.m. at Lake Grove Presbyterian Church, 4040 Sunset Drive, Lake Oswego, Oregon.
